FAQ's Regarding Registering Cattle

Q: How does the process and timeline for Whole Herd Reporting work?
A: Whole Herd Reporting is an inventory based fee structure designed to promote accurate collection of information. An inventory listing of your herd is mailed to you each May. You must review and update this inventory by June 1st. You are then billed $15 for all assessment age animals and payment is due September 1st ($8.50) and March 1st ($6.50). For females, this fee then includes the registration and transfer of her calf each year and waives the AI permit fee. Not updating your inventory results in incorrect billings which then require even more time and effort on your part and for the registration department.
Q: Do I have to purchase Single Birth Applications if I am on Whole Herd Reporting?
A: No, each May you will receive pre-printed Multiple Birth Report and Registration Applications. These forms will include all females in your herd and simplifies the registration process. You simply need to fill in the calf information. You may also transfer the calf to a new owner on the same form. You may also request pre-printed forms at other times of the year to more accurately time registrations to your calving seasons.
Q: What information is essential to register a calf?
A: To register any calf with the American Shorthorn Association, you must provide a calf name, tattoo (including ear), sex, birthdate, color, horned or polled, dam and sire. In addition, if the calf was sired through AI or the results of an ET, that information must be provided and the proper certificates must accompany the registration application. ASA also requests breeders to include birth, weaning and yearling weights and calving ease score.
Q: Can I use Multiple Birth Forms to register ET calves?
A: No, all ET calves must be registered on the Single Birth Report and Registration Application. Please also make sure to mark the box for ET and attach necessary certificates. AI or ET calves submitted for registration without the proper certificates are held and a RFI will be automatically generated and mailed to you. Your registrations will remain on hold until your proper certificates are received at the ASA office.
Q: Where do I get AI and ET certificates?
A: All AI and ET certificates are sold by ASA to the owners of the AI sires and donor dams. You must then purchase these certificates from the animal's owners. REmember, the AI and ET permit fees are not the same as the certificates. AI and ET permit fees are charged on all animals originating from AI or through embryo transfer. The only exception is AI permit fees are waived for animals registered through the WHR program.
Q: What animals must be DNA Genotyped/TH Tested?
A: All donor dams, AI sires, and cloned animals must have a DNA genotype and TH status on record. The ASA strongly recommends you TH Test and DNA Genotype any sire you plan to have semen collected on or female you plan to flush prior to completing the procedures. AI and ET certificates will under no circumstances be issued on animals that have not been TH Tested and DNA Genotyped from the same sample. Hair samples for DNA testing can only be used to determine parentage and is not useable for TH verification. At this time, only blood or semen can be used for TH Testing.
Q: What is the single most important thing I can do to ensure timely processing of my registrations?
A: Double check your registration application for incomplete or inaccurate information! Forty percent of all work received by the ASA office has some type of problem. Double checking your work prior to sending it to the ASA will help to alleviate frustration across the board. |
